Maharashtra is taking major strides in boosting its maritime infrastructure, with plans to develop six marine shipyard clusters along its coastline. The ambitious initiative aims to attract investments worth ₹6,600 crore and generate 40,000 employment opportunities by 2030.
The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), the nodal agency overseeing the project, has shortlisted six potential sites for the shipyard clusters. The first phase will consider Nandgaon (Palghar), Dighi (Raigad), and Vijaydurg (Sindhudurg) as potential locations for development.
Techno-Economic Feasibility Study to Guide Development
A consultant will soon be appointed to conduct a comprehensive techno-economic feasibility study, which will include site evaluation, engineering design, financial analysis, as well as environmental and social impact assessments.
The proposed shipyards vary in size, with Nandgaon being the largest at 2,666 acres, followed by Dighi at 2,550 acres, and Vijaydurg at 1,371 acres. “The consultant will help us determine the most feasible site among the three shortlisted,” said Pradeep P, CEO of MMB.
Policy Support to Attract Investment
This initiative is aligned with Maharashtra’s Shipbuilding, Ship Repair and Ship Recycling Policy, 2025, which offers multiple incentives for private players, including:
15% capital subsidy
R&D support up to ₹25 crore
Skill development incentives
Concessional land leases
With these measures, Maharashtra aims to position itself as a hub for shipbuilding and repair in India, attracting both domestic and international investment while creating thousands of skilled jobs along its coastline.
