A social media influencer from Uttar Pradesh has been formally charged after allegedly making objectionable and offensive remarks against Shankar Lalwani, the Member of Parliament from Indore. The case stems from a video posted on Instagram that circulated widely following the ongoing Bhagirathpura water contamination tragedy in Indore, which has drawn intense public and legal scrutiny.

What Happened
The Indore Crime Branch registered a case against the influencer, identified as Jatin Mishra, also known as Jatin Shukla, after a complaint was lodged by a representative of the MP. The complaint alleged that a viral reel contained indecent language and personal allegations directed at the MP in the context of the controversial water‑related deaths in Bhagirathpura.
Police officials say that the reel went viral and included remarks that crossed from legitimate criticism into abusive and misleading content. Based on evidence including screenshots and video files submitted with the complaint, the Crime Branch registered a case against the influencer after a preliminary inquiry.
Legal Action
The case was filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including provisions related to intentional insult and disobedience to public orders. This means the influencer could face legal consequences if investigations confirm the remarks were offensive and disturbed public peace. Police have emphasized that the action is aimed at curbing the spread of misleading or objectionable material during a sensitive public situation, not to suppress freedom of expression.
Context: Bhagirathpura Water Crisis
The remarks were made against the backdrop of the Bhagirathpura contaminated water crisis in Indore’s Madhya Pradesh, where many residents became seriously ill due to contaminated municipal drinking water. The incident has resulted in multiple reported fatalities and widespread public concern over water safety and administrative accountability. This has also prompted judicial scrutiny and investigations into the contamination sources.
Social Media and Public Reaction
Jatin Shukla, who runs multiple Instagram pages with a combined following of several thousand, is known for posting political commentary and critical content about public representatives and government actions. The posts in question went beyond political criticism according to police, as they included misleading claims and offensive language directed at the MP.
The filing of the FIR has drawn mixed responses online, with some users defending the need to hold leaders accountable while others warn against crossing into abusive language that can mislead or inflame tensions during sensitive public episodes.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing. Further legal action or charges will depend on the outcome of the inquiry and corroboration of evidence against the influencer. Police maintain that the objective is to regulate the dissemination of harmful content rather than stifle legitimate public discourse.
