A high-intensity search operation is underway in the Gadol forests of Anantnag district, Jammu & Kashmir, to locate two Army commandos who went missing while on personal duty on Monday evening. The search involves Indian Army troops, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and CRPF personnel, with drones and helicopters providing aerial surveillance.

Challenging Terrain and Adverse Conditions

The Gadol forest is known for its thick vegetation and rugged terrain, making operations challenging. According to military sources, the missing soldiers may have been caught in a sudden snowstorm, which disrupted communication. While initial search efforts were slowed by adverse weather, conditions have now improved, allowing ground and air teams to intensify the hunt.

On the night of October 6-7, an operational team in the Kishtwar range faced severe snow and whiteout conditions. Since then, two soldiers lost contact, prompting an immediate Search and Rescue operation,” the Army stated.

Strategic Shifts in Jungle Warfare

The search comes amid a broader strategy shift in Jammu & Kashmir, following the Pahalgam terrorist attack in April that killed 26 civilians. Security forces have strengthened jungle warfare tactics, deploying small, agile teams to counter Pakistan-trained militants skilled in forest operations.

The missing commandos were reportedly engaged in a similar mission when they went off the radar. Ground teams are covering vast stretches of the forest, while drones and helicopters provide real-time intelligence to locate the soldiers.

Historical Context

The Gadol area has seen multiple deadly incidents over the years. Last year, two soldiers and a civilian were killed in a gunfight. Two years ago, a Major and a Deputy Superintendent of Police were among five security personnel killed in the same forests.

While the involvement of militants in this incident is yet to be confirmed, the region has experienced repeated attacks by Pakistan-trained operatives carrying out covert operations in mountainous and forested zones.

Authorities continue to coordinate the search with precision, emphasizing the importance of swift action and public vigilance in these sensitive zones.
